This photo is a career marker for me - it was my first time using an 8 x 10 large format camera, and now it is one of my favorite ways to shoot. This was a set I built at my studio, and all the dresses and wigs were handmade. This photo was the first taken for the series. The intent behind the “Decadence” series was to emulate the over-the-top opulence that we associate with the Palace of Versailles, in the era of King Louis XVI & Queen Marie Antoinette. My task here was getting everyone to stay still while holding delicious pastries, wearing priceless dresses, and sporting 10-pound wigs. This was not as easy as it sounds, but the result was well worth it. When we were shooting, it felt like we had time traveled. People really took on their roles, fighting over which dress, wig or look they would have. Shot on a Deardorff 8 by 10 camera
