The Gator was named Gary, and he was very intense at the start of the shoot. They (the trainers) told me that the closest I should get to him was 6 feet as he had bit a trainer weeks prior to the shoot. However, as the day went on, Gary calmed down, and you can see we got very very close to him. We did this shoot outside during the day, and during this exact moment while the model was laying there face to face with him, a pigeon landed on my foot, and I could see Gary getting ready to attack it, and or me. The pigeon, having no idea what this animal was, just walked around, and then I yelled at it and he flew away never knowing how close he came to death. People often ask if this is a real gator, and when they find out the story it makes the photo all the more insane! Shot on Hasselblad H camera with Kodak film.
