The statuesque silhouette of a maned lion stands poised on a granite outcrop against a darkening sky. The impending rains are a welcome sight across the grasslands, signaling the start of new life. With ample prey and a flourishing, healthy ecosystem, the lion prides here are among the most robust in the world. Still, abundance is no guarantee of survival. Each pride member has a role to play, and it is the responsibility of males like this one to protect their families from outside rivals and potential threats.
